The December release is exciting! The Pricing Department introduced 24 new line items this month. There are two line items that warrant acute examination in particular:

(a) Provide stretch film/wrap – up to 5" x 1000′ roll (b) Acclimating floor material (Bid Item)

Let’s first examine stretch film/wrap. This line item was adopted in an effort to increase accuracy when invoicing for Packout activities. Formerly, estimators were not provided the option to accurately invoice for hand held stretch wrap components. Historically, Packout providers were forced to over-scope via the [two handed stretch film/wrap] line item or under-scope the Packout invoice by simply omitting this consumable. The introduction of the handheld film/wrap line item helps users scope more accurately and champions swift and noble claims settlement.

Now, let’s unpack the flooring material acclimation bid item. This is such an interesting addition to the Price List. This line item would traditionally be associated with solid wood and engineered wood flooring materials. There is little need to acclimate inorganic building materials such as linoleum sheet goods, tile, snaplock/laminate flooring, carpet etc. In fact, we would remain skeptical about those that would choose to apply this line item outside of solid/engineered wood flooring. Having said that, this is a bid item, so it is not terribly clear what this line item might include. Does this line item exist to satisfy the cost of delivering the materials to the installation area? Does it include taking moisture readings, several trips, etc… We just aren’t sure yet. That said, we believe there are two things we can infer: (a) The Pricing Department has arrived at the conclusion that there are costs associated with acclimating flooring. (b) The related flooring line items don’t include concessions for acclimation of flooring. We look forward to tracking this line item’s adoption and application. When the Pricing Department does a cluster analysis call against this line a year or so from now it will likely impart some interesting insights i.e., is this one item typically invoiced for as a percentage of the related flooring materials cost? Is it invoiced as a flat fee irrespective of the materials cost; is there a square foot price that may evolve into an ”add for” line item that typically augment solid/engineered wood floor activities. Only time will tell. What do you guys think?
